What I Like About Internet JobsI have been listening to a tape program called Top Performance by Zig Ziglar and there is a section about what you like about you job. That got me thinking about the internet jobs in general and how far our work life has come over the years. I've been working at Basement Systems for almost 4 years now as one of the webmasters of the company. We have been very successful in the web department where we now have over 20 people working in the web department of a basement repair company. Now, that's cool. Today is Saturday. I'm at the office planning on doing some work work and personal work. What does this have to do with the title of this page? I'll tell you... I can read an email message at home, do some work, go to sleep and then come to work and follow up on that. I really appreciate that and what other field can you do this in? Web files are generally saved on a server which lives in the SKY somewhere and you pull down the files you are working on from anywhere with FTP and internet connection. Of course, you have to like what you do for this to make sense otherwise, why would you work on Saturdays??? Say you were a doctor, mechanic, or lawyer. Let's face it as a doctor, you can't operate on the same patient at your house and at the hospital. As a mechanic you won't work on the same car from your house and then from work garage. As a lawyer, you may not get all legal documents to come with you to your house. So on.. and so on... Which is OKAY... you just stay late hours and get the jobs done. Where as I can access my work from my house at anytime. It's the internet, email technology and servers make connecting to your personal and work life smoothly. You may be one of those people who thinks it's a bad idea to connect your personal life and work life together. If you are then I got a piece of advise for you; get a new job that you LIKE. Technology is making our lives so much easier and transparent, it's not even funny. Rather then fighting it, get with the flow and use it to your advantage. Currently, internet jobs allow us to be more flexible in the way we work and from where we work. I love my internet job :)
Comment by April Storm That is true one of the best parts about our job is the flexibility of what and when we can work. However, some companies tend to not understand or trust this and still demand the 8 to 5 hours and then some extra hours at last minute notice without appreciation or extra pay. It has been said oh that is part of your "job" or you have to do extra to get further without expecting anything in return. I agree you have to work hard and do more to get further but why can't I do my job to the fullest during the time structure that is agreed on? Or as a special case stay late? Companies end up pushing and want more and more and rely on these extra hours and wanting more and more so they do not plan or staff correctly. so as wonderful and flexible our job can be it can also be a trap and a nightmare where you are only taken advantage of... This has happened to me at previous jobs and that is why... Now... I draw a line of what type and when I do extra work. If something is broken or important that came up that needs to get done by all means I will do what needs to be done and always go the extra mile. If it is work that needs to be done because of poor scheduling, understaffed, or a unreasonable deadline... That is not cool to me... no employee should constantly be put in that position... Now if a company was more flexible with the work and lunch hours and working from home here and there, then I would totally be all about do whatever needs to get done when and where because the effort and understanding is mutual from both sides. It is not cool if I work all weekend and then be expected to work all week on a structured time frame without question. It is just not cool. Now a big part of your post is the company we work for Basement Systems is more understanding and a little flexible and doesn't expect or ask anyone to do off hours. So a big part of your post is the quality of company you work for to get this great benefit :) Personally my favorite part of our job type is creating and building things using awesome technology and software that is constantly evolving :) for people to use and experience! My constant goal is to look back at what we did and say "wow, now that is good!" :) Comment by Eric Comment by Eric Got any Comments? |
